ZIMBABWE – HARARE – Job Sikhala led MDC group yesterday wrote a letter to former South African president, Mr Thabo Mbeki claiming the party was pulling out of the Global Political Agreement.
Sikhala who declared himself MDC president last month has been in the limelight for the past weeks, as turbulence continues to rock the Professor Arthur Mutambara MDC.
The MDC faction led by Prof Mutambara has since announced that it has fired Sikhala, in a development that has reduced the whole affair into a political circus.
In his letter, Mr Sikhala said his party had withdrawn from the GPA claiming that the party had not been initially consulted when negotiations commenced.
“(Prof) Arthur Mutambara is no longer the MDC president as two thirds of the party structures have passed a vote of no confidence against him,” read the letter signed by Mr Sikhala who cited several unsubstantiated reasons.
“In view of this, be advised that the MDC is no longer bound by any resolutions of the GPA and the party is going to contest in all byelections.”
However, the spokesperson for the Mutambara led MDC, Mr Edwin Mushoriwa dismissed Mr Sikhala’s letter as a “publicity seeking stunt”.
“He can not purport to be a member of a party he was fired from. Who is Sikhala, he is just a clown who is seeking publicity and the letter should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves,” said Mr Mushoriwa.
The MDC fired Mr Sikhala together with three Members of House of Assembly for misconduct.
The party eventually wrote to the Speaker of House of Assembly, Mr Lovemore Moyo to eject them from Parliament, which has since been done.
The expelled MPs are Bulilima East Member of House of Assembly, Mr Norman Mpofu, Nkayi South Member of House of Assembly, Mr Abednico Bhebhe, Lupane East, MP, Mr Njabuliso Mguni.
They were fired after the party’s disciplinary committee found them guilty of misconduct last month
